The Center for Community Geography is excited to announce support for a new UNM course in spring 2021. The Department of Geography & Environmental Studies will offer “Critical Cartography” for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students for the first time this spring.

The new course will feature eight weeks of readings on the history/theory of cartography and eight weeks devoted to a collaborative mapping project. The Center for Community Geography is the campus coordinator for the applied mapping portion of the course. Center staff will provide logistical support to help students engage with our partner, National Trails – NPS, to design and implement a student-led cartographic project for the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historical Trail in Bernalillo County, New Mexico.

Course instructor Dr. Maria Lane said she is excited about the new partnership. “This opportunity will give students a good view of the full cartographic process,” she said. “From conceptual planning and design decisions, they will get to think deeply about how a mapping process can best meets community needs.”

The course will be offered partly in-person and partly through UNM’s remote learning platform. Interested students can access registration information for spring 2021 in early November.
