Geography Awareness Week

November 1, 2020

Next week is Geography Awareness Week, when geography educators and professionals host events and workshops nationwide to highlight the many contributions geographers and Geographic Information Scientists make to our society.

To celebrate Geography Awareness Week, the Center for Community Geography will participate both in UNM events and in external workshops focused on using geographic technologies to support community-led development initiatives.

On Monday and Tuesday, November 16-17, Center staff will attend the 2020 Indigenous Mapping Workshop. This virtual workshop is “dedicated to the development and advancement of culturally appropriate and inclusive geospatial technologies for Indigenous communities.” Center Director Maria Lane said this workshop is “a great opportunity to focus on community-led initiatives as the driver for geographical research.” The workshop provides both technical training and networking opportunities.

On Wednesday, November 18, Center staff will observe GIS Day by attending a “Low Budget High Fidelity” mapping webinar to learn about creative mapping approaches using across a variety of domains.

On Friday, November 20, the Center for Communitiy Geography will join UNM’s Department of Geography & Environmental Studies in welcoming GES Alumnus, Dr. Michael Pease, to campus for a virtual colloquium on the topic of “Active Water Resource Management: Pariah or Blueprint for Western Water Management?” Dr. Pease completed a master’s degree in Geography at UNM before going on to get a doctorate. He is now Chair of the Geography Department and Director of the Public Policy Program at Central Washington University.
