Tijeras Creek Cultural Corridor Project (TCCCP)

End Date:
Ongoing
The Mission of the TCCC Project is to Protect the living cultural landscape of the Tijeras Watershed for current and future generations by creating a sense of place through oral histories, landscape, and relationships between land, animals, water, and people. The project is a multi-municipality collaboration between the City of Albuquerque Open Space, Bernalillo County, the Village of Tijeras, and the Carnuel Land Grant.Through trails, landmarks, and cultural sites, the TCCC provides a variety of ways to connect with the natural environment and cultural history of the East Mountains and the animals, plants, and people who call this area home. The project was initiated in 2020 to develop a series of interpretive signage along the “Tijeras Creek Cultural Corridor,” an area stretching from Eastern Albuquerque to the East Mountains, along Historic Route 66. In 2022, the Center for Community Geography was brought onto the project to add mapping and historical geography expertise. Center staff member, Cassidy Tawse-Garcia worked with the project team, facilitated by Consensus Planning of Albuquerque, NM, to develop and implement a TCCCP StoryMap, which includes oral histories, media, and maps detailing the area. Cassidy also assisted in the design and mapping of the project, as well as facilitating multiple oral history interviews to build out the cultural repository for the project.
